The Challenge

Small poultry producers often face low hatching rates due to limited access to affordable and efficient incubation technology. Traditional incubators can be expensive, inefficient, or difficult to monitor, which affects chick survival, production, and producer income.

Key Problems Identified:

  • Low chick survival rates in traditional incubation processes.
  • Limited access to affordable smart incubators.
  • Difficulty monitoring temperature and humidity in real time.
  • Manual egg turning increased the risk of inconsistent incubation.

Business Strategy & Cost Analysis

The Solution

Intellicube was developed as a smart egg incubator that uses sensors, automatic egg turning, and remote monitoring to improve the incubation process for different types of poultry eggs.

Temperature and Humidity Monitoring

The incubator uses sensors to monitor key environmental conditions during the incubation process.

Automatic Egg Turning

A roller-based system automatically turns the eggs, helping maintain a more consistent incubation cycle.

Remote Web Monitoring

I developed the web application using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP to visualize incubation data remotely.

Integrated Camera

The system included a camera to observe the incubation process without physically opening the incubator.

National Stage

At InnovaTecNM 2023

Intellicube achieved an approximate hatching rate of 85% during testing, compared to a traditional average close to 30%. The prototype was tested for 122 days in a farm near Chihuahua, resulting in 53 chicks hatched from different poultry species, including quail, chicken, and turkey. The project also competed in InnovaTecNM 2023, winning 1st place locally, 2nd place regionally, and reaching the national stage in Puebla.

Key Learnings

Seeing technology help bring chicks into the world made the project feel almost magical.

This was the first time I saw programming beyond just creating things... I understood that software and hardware can also become real business opportunities.

Working with a multidisciplinary team helped me understand how technical decisions connect with costs, pricing, and product viability.
